Basic Texas Holdem Poker Strategy

Some basic texas holdem poker strategy

Of the million hands that exist in poker, 169 can only be achievable in texas holdem startinghands. That's if you count the King and Queen of hearts has the same value as King and Queen in diamonds. Let's say that the flop is three diamonds, then the king of diamonds would be more valuable than the king of hearts of course, but you can't predict what's going to happen next, in this case the two hands are equal before the flop.

Starting hands are important.

The 169 unique starting hands can fit into five categories; pairs, sequencecards, cards in sequence of the same color, holecards and holecards of the same color. These are the hands you will care about. An example of sequence cards are Q-J, 8-7. Cards that are not in sequence can be K-J, 5-8 but these cards can be made together with a number of cards to form a straight.

Easier to get a straight with smaller gaps

The chances of getting a straight increases the smaller the gap is. Let's say that you have J-7. The only chance that you can get a straight with those cards would be if you got 8-9-10. If you would've got 10-9, then the chances increases dramatically, because then you can form a straight with K-Q-J, Q-J-8, and J-8-7. If you get a hand like AK, you can only get a straight with K-J-10. It's almost the same with A-2 because you will get a straight with 3-4-5, but these are on the lower side of the card deck. Don't play cards that require 4 hole cards, unless they are of the same color and maybe if it were under good circumstances.

Hole cards

Hole cards are not as good as sequence cards, but that is dependent on how difficult it is to form a straight. But if you're looking to form a flush, you do not need to think about that the cards aren't in sequence. A flush created with AK is as good with the one created with A-6, but in this case the AK is more worth because you also have the chance of getting a straight if you shouldn't get a flush.

Positioning

If you are the last one to act, it is a great advantage because you know how many players will stay in the pot and you can see how they played during the betting round. Someone who plays a good hand in later position have a great advantage. Some hands may even be better off playing with a small amount of players. Other will be better playing against large amount of players. In the later position, at the dealer button for instance you can see which players play aggressive, the later position, the more information you get. Poker is a game of knowledge, but you cannot know everything, but it plays a important role.
